The Živio band has been playing acoustic, mostly traditional music from Eastern Europe for over 30 years. We love the unusual rhythms and harmonies of the Balkans. The often turbulent history of the Balkans - layers upon layers of religious, ethnic and cultural conflicts mingled with long hours gathered around smoky fires over hundreds of years - has created a sound completely unique to this region.

 

It sings of battles where blood flowed like rivers and forbidden love was dared; it carries the poetry of scented roses and the pounding rhythm of clear water in deep mountain ravines; it sings with a loud voice that carries across fields; it sings of lost heros and sad brides; herders who watch over their goats and play kaval to while away long hours and singing women who weave wool into heavy cloths to guard against winter’s cold.
